As a Florida resident, we all know that bedbugs are not the most beloved insects despite their name. Many love bugs flock near roads, and as a result, cars traveling through the clouds of these insects end up having reduced visibility - potentially leading to car crashes. If you are dealing with a swarm of love bugs in your home or car, you are not alone! Let's talk about what love bugs are, where they thrive, and how to get rid of them.

What is Lovebug?
The name says it all - lovebugs are insects that are usually paired with a "mate". They will attach their bodies to their companion and fly side by side. It has black bodies and red heads, and is usually 6-9 millimeters long. Although referred to as insects, these insects are actually flies. They are closely related to midges and gnawing mosquitoes rather than other common insects such as grasshoppers or termites.

Since their time as flies is only a short period of their life cycle, they spend most of their lives as larvae. Females lay their eggs on the ground and can have around 200-300 eggs alone. Yikes! The good news is that although these bugs are a nuisance to drivers, they cannot cause any physical harm to you or your pets.
Where are they most common?
Lovebugs made Florida their home because they thrive in warm, humid climates - usually on the Gulf Coast. Often times these flies are seen in flocks, often during the two specified mating seasons - once in the spring (April to May), then again in late summer (August to September). Cars are often crowded into crowds of insects because they are attracted to the fumes from the vehicles. You will often find them swarming in fast-moving vehicles during the day.
Why are bedbugs such a danger?
Although bugs do not bite or bite humans, they can cause damage in several other ways - most notably to your car. Here are the most common ways in which lovemaking can be dangerous:
It can affect your vision while driving. Since they are densely packed with cars, they can create clouds that can seriously impair your driving visibility. Make sure to drive carefully during the mating months, and if you notice swarms of lovebugs on your car while driving, slow down or stop.
Cause damage to your car engine. While driving, the Love Ranger can enter your car radiator, causing the car parts to become clogged. In extreme cases, they can cover the car's grille to disrupt the engine's airflow, and cause the vehicle to overheat. Yikes!
It can damage the paintwork of your car. Moreover, they can cause more damage even if they are already dead. Bed bug residues can damage the paintwork of your car because hours in the sun can cause their bodies to turn acidic. To avoid this, be sure to rinse and remove the love bugs on the roof of your car within a day.
They can invade areas with excess moisture. While these pesky pests are commonly found in cars, this does not mean that they cannot enter your home. Since these wet areas have the potential to grow plants, they create food and an environment for bed bugs to breed. If you live in an area where lovebugs are common, they can easily make their way into dark, damp areas such as basements, attics and storage rooms.
They can disturb your plants. Plants around your home can be breeding and feeding grounds for lovebugs. Female flies seek moist environments, complete with food sources, to lay their larvae - so watch them on flower beds.
Ways to Get Rid of Lovebugs
Now that we know exactly what lovebugs are and why they pose such risks, let's talk about how to get rid of them. You know what they say - an ounce of prevention is worth a penny of treatment, and when it comes to the atmosphere of love, this statement is true. Here are the best ways to prevent and get rid of bugs in Florida:
Clean your car frequently with warm, soapy water if it is covered with bed bugs. In order to prevent germs, wax your car before mating season - this will make it harder for them to stick outside.
Ensure that there is no standing water in your home, in both yard and storage areas. Be aware of your home's humidity to protect your home before it spreads.
Try natural sprays with essential oils, such as peppermint, to repel flies from your space. A safe, simple (and sometimes effective) approach to bidding farewell to bugs.
Remove debris from your lawn. These items can also attract the breeding female to lay her larvae.
Vacuum it: If lovebugs find their way into your home, you can try sucking them in through a vacuum cleaner. |
